The term entered the lexicon thanks to the political scientist Giovanni Sartori who had famously referred to the 1993 law as the `Mattarellum’ after its principal sponsor, Sergio Mattarella. The 2005 law became known as the Porcellum’ after its principal sponsor, Roberto Calderoli, referred to it as una porcata, translatable as `a pig’s breakfast’ or `a dirty trick’.
